Soccer

Soccer, known as football in most countries outside North America, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net using any part of the body except the arms and hands, with the exception of the goalkeeper. The game is played on a rectangular field, known as a pitch, with a goal at each end. It is governed by a set of laws known as the Laws of the Game, maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

Soccer is the world’s most popular sport, with an estimated 4 billion fans globally. It is played at both amateur and professional levels and features major competitions such as the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, and domestic leagues worldwide. The simplicity of its rules, coupled with the minimal equipment required to play, has contributed to its widespread appeal and the ability to be played in various environments. The game emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and skill and can be played on grass, artificial turf, or other surfaces.
